Mission

Project Sunstone is an ongoing research effort with the mission to examine, advance, and help others practice the art and science of foresight development. The vision for this site is to build a community that shares and furthers this goal. Please join us on this journey.

Our Story

Project Sunstone began as an effort to incorporate foresight into technology development programs. Engineers and project managers tend to focus on the immediate problem before them. That’s understandable as their job is to satisfy project requirements and get a solution out the door. The problem is that many solutions don’t hold up well going forward. They can’t adapt to a changing environment and insert emerging technologies. They don’t anticipate growth and therefore quickly become obsolete. They also don’t consider the bigger picture that might create future opportunities.

We fully understand the need to address current problems. We have to keep customers and shareholders happy, fix machines, ship products, fill vacant positions, etc. now or there might not be a tomorrow. However, we believe you can satisfy today’s needs while simultaneously positioning for the future.

Our foresight development work has evolved over the years. We’ve expanded it into more areas and refined our methods over time. We’ve developed a systematic, repeatable, and tailorable framework that can be used to integrate foresight development into just about any function within an organization. This site is devoted to sharing what we’ve learned so you can incorporate foresight development into your own operations.

Why Sunstone?

Medieval Vikings used the polarizing properties of the sunstone to determine a direction towards the sun when it wasn’t visible due to fog or overcast skies; an essential need for maritime navigation in their region. The sunstone pierced through the obstacles to provide a direction when that direction wasn’t otherwise clear. This is what we seek to accomplish through foresight development.
